I have no idea what made me think of this [Jun. 21st, 2009|02:55 am]
Those girls that ask all the questions in Leader of the Pack (especially at the beginning) always really pissed me off. How the FUCK did they not already know that story? "At school they all stopped and stared." And damn, it has to be a sensitive subject for her, too.

Why is it bothering me so much that I turned away a homeless woman who, at 2AM, rang my doorbell and asked if we could spare a room for the night?

Technology hates me. [Dec. 31st, 2008|01:45 pm]

[Current Music |I have Symphonie Fantastique stuck in my head]

Back in the summer, I considered myself blessed because when my laptop's motherboard died, I found that I was still under warranty for about two weeks (at the end of a four-year run). Then yesterday, I found that my backlight wasn't working... according to Dell, replacing the relevant part would cost $500-600.

Well, fuck you, Dell. I found a new $600 Toshiba laptop for $450. Thanks for that rebate, Newegg. You're the best. And thanks for calling the new laptop a birthday present, Mom. You're also the best. And on top of that, about ten minutes ago, looking under the couch for a missing steak knife, I found an old flash drive that I lost almost two years ago. Thanks, Mr. Panagiotopoulos. For the sake of consistency, you too are the best.

In other news, I appear to enjoy thanking people who don't read my LiveJournal and calling them the best. Now I'm going to go wait for 4:05pm to appear so that Chris will arrive. Whee!

Happy New Year!

Edit:

Here is the laptop in question: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114611

WTF? [Dec. 28th, 2008|11:10 pm]
[Current Mood |confusedconfused]

One of the outlets in my room at home is only two prongs, but it's right next to my desk and I need three prongs. My dad had an extra three-prong receptacle sitting around, so we decided to install it. When we took the original one out, we found that the wires were coiled together in a weird way, so I needed to untwist them before I could install the new one. I'm pretty sure the circuitry is 50 years old, so I guess that accounts for the oddities.

But I'm pretty sure that was happened next was IMPOSSIBLE.

Beforehand, we of course went down to the fusebox and made sure that part of the house was off. What I don't understand is how I got that nasty shock. Or the sparks that appeared a bit. Or how the light on the other side of my room flickered, even though its outlet was connected to a switch that was off (and on the same disconnected fuse). Either way, the result is that my room has no electricity. Nor does the dining room below me. What the hell happened?

Seriously.

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Banana Teddy Grahams are a very interesting thing to eat. And apparently made with real bananas.

I just came back from a hike with my dogs, and on the way in the door, Stitch made a funny warbling sound, as he is wont to do when he wants attention. I replied with "Yeah, that's what she said"

What the hell kind of girls am I thinking about?

Plans change. [Dec. 19th, 2008|04:46 pm]
[Current Mood |aggravatedaggravated]
[Current Music |Sound effects behind the Portal speed run I'm doing]

This was a hellish day of time on the phone with various people... but at least things will work out. Sort of.

The Original Plan:
My car gets fixed and back from the body shop today, Friday, the day before I go home. I pack tonight, then grab Aja and her stuff so we can drive back home together. Chris arrives at my house New Year's Eve, and we drive up to Oberlin together on January 2 so she can start her mini-semester. January 14th, I return to Rochester.

The Problem:
My car isn't ready. The guy from the body shop couldn't guarantee me anything earlier than Tuesday at noon. This can't work, because Aja is apparently going to NYC on Sunday. Also, three weeks is a long time to keep a rental car. I don't think Skip from Vision Collision would be willing to pay that much. I also don't want to drive a rental to Oberlin. I want my fucking car back.

The New Plan:
I'm going to Enterprise tomorrow to pick up a car. The insurance is willing to pay up to $25 per day for the rental, but the car cost is going to be slightly more than that. At least by using insurance, I don't have to pay the extra $300 fee that comes with being under the age of 25. Skip offered to pay the difference, so my rental car is going to be free and I can get Aja home. Wooo, not driving alone! Chris is still going to arrive in Philly at the same time as the original plan, but now we're going to stop in Rochester on the way up to Oberlin, which adds about 3 hours to the driving time.

It's not the best plan, but it'll do.

Ain't-a That Good News? [Dec. 10th, 2008|11:55 pm]
[Current Mood |cheerfulcheerful]
[Current Music |Cliffs of Dover]

Today was a pretty good day. Blow by blow, I:

  1. Had a group project presentation at 9:40 this morning. It went pretty well, and that class is basically out of the way now
  2. Took a nap behind the desk at ITS, under one of the tables (half napping, half chatting with James)
  3. Another project presentation, which also went happily. That class is completely out of the way!
  4. Had a meeting with the SEAS dean about research opportunities in her lab. I don't know how fantastic an impression I made on her, but that's okay because
  5. She said my problems with transfer credits shouldn't have existed in the first place, and she'll see what she can do to get it fixed.
  6. I went to tell Barb, the ECE mom, about talking to the dean, because she was very surprised the first time this crap all happened. While I was there, I found out that the Off-Monroe Players are performing a Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas Carol this weekend. Hooray nostalgia!
  7. Later on, I found out that one of my favorite webcomics is back from yet another hiatus.
  8. My dinner included nearly a full pound of beef. Granted, I didn't get a chance to eat before like 7pm today, but a pound is a pretty big achievement for me.

....and on the subject of bullet point six, does anybody want to go see it? I'm looking at Saturday, 8pm.
