Those girls that ask all the questions in Leader of the Pack (especially at the beginning) always really pissed me off. How the FUCK did they not already know that story? "At school they all stopped and stared." And damn, it has to be a sensitive subject for her, too. |

Why is it bothering me so much that I turned away a homeless woman who, at 2AM, rang my doorbell and asked if we could spare a room for the night? |

| | I have Symphonie Fantastique stuck in my head | ] | Back in the summer, I considered myself blessed because when my laptop's motherboard died, I found that I was still under warranty for about two weeks (at the end of a four-year run). Then yesterday, I found that my backlight wasn't working... according to Dell, replacing the relevant part would cost $500-600.
Well, fuck you, Dell. I found a new $600 Toshiba laptop for $450. Thanks for that rebate, Newegg. You're the best. And thanks for calling the new laptop a birthday present, Mom. You're also the best. And on top of that, about ten minutes ago, looking under the couch for a missing steak knife, I found an old flash drive that I lost almost two years ago. Thanks, Mr. Panagiotopoulos. For the sake of consistency, you too are the best.
In other news, I appear to enjoy thanking people who don't read my LiveJournal and calling them the best. Now I'm going to go wait for 4:05pm to appear so that Chris will arrive. Whee!
Happy New Year!

| | confused | ] | One of the outlets in my room at home is only two prongs, but it's right next to my desk and I need three prongs. My dad had an extra three-prong receptacle sitting around, so we decided to install it. When we took the original one out, we found that the wires were coiled together in a weird way, so I needed to untwist them before I could install the new one. I'm pretty sure the circuitry is 50 years old, so I guess that accounts for the oddities.
But I'm pretty sure that was happened next was IMPOSSIBLE.
Beforehand, we of course went down to the fusebox and made sure that part of the house was off. What I don't understand is how I got that nasty shock. Or the sparks that appeared a bit. Or how the light on the other side of my room flickered, even though its outlet was connected to a switch that was off (and on the same disconnected fuse). Either way, the result is that my room has no electricity. Nor does the dining room below me. What the hell happened?
Seriously.
WHAT. THE. FUCK. |

| | Sound effects behind the Portal speed run I'm doing | ] | This was a hellish day of time on the phone with various people... but at least things will work out. Sort of.
The Original Plan: My car gets fixed and back from the body shop today, Friday, the day before I go home. I pack tonight, then grab Aja and her stuff so we can drive back home together. Chris arrives at my house New Year's Eve, and we drive up to Oberlin together on January 2 so she can start her mini-semester. January 14th, I return to Rochester.
The Problem: My car isn't ready. The guy from the body shop couldn't guarantee me anything earlier than Tuesday at noon. This can't work, because Aja is apparently going to NYC on Sunday. Also, three weeks is a long time to keep a rental car. I don't think Skip from Vision Collision would be willing to pay that much. I also don't want to drive a rental to Oberlin. I want my fucking car back.
The New Plan: I'm going to Enterprise tomorrow to pick up a car. The insurance is willing to pay up to $25 per day for the rental, but the car cost is going to be slightly more than that. At least by using insurance, I don't have to pay the extra $300 fee that comes with being under the age of 25. Skip offered to pay the difference, so my rental car is going to be free and I can get Aja home. Wooo, not driving alone! Chris is still going to arrive in Philly at the same time as the original plan, but now we're going to stop in Rochester on the way up to Oberlin, which adds about 3 hours to the driving time.
It's not the best plan, but it'll do. |

| | Cliffs of Dover | ] | Today was a pretty good day. Blow by blow, I:
- Had a group project presentation at 9:40 this morning. It went pretty well, and that class is basically out of the way now
- Took a nap behind the desk at ITS, under one of the tables (half napping, half chatting with James)
- Another project presentation, which also went happily. That class is completely out of the way!
- Had a meeting with the SEAS dean about research opportunities in her lab. I don't know how fantastic an impression I made on her, but that's okay because
- She said my problems with transfer credits shouldn't have existed in the first place, and she'll see what she can do to get it fixed.
- I went to tell Barb, the ECE mom, about talking to the dean, because she was very surprised the first time this crap all happened. While I was there, I found out that the Off-Monroe Players are performing a Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas Carol this weekend. Hooray nostalgia!
- Later on, I found out that one of my favorite webcomics is back from yet another hiatus.
- My dinner included nearly a full pound of beef. Granted, I didn't get a chance to eat before like 7pm today, but a pound is a pretty big achievement for me.
....and on the subject of bullet point six, does anybody want to go see it? I'm looking at Saturday, 8pm. |

Happier things than small tables:
- The week is over. It was not a fun week.
- Symphonie Fantastique is awesome, and I just played it. Next concert, we play the Planets (sorry Brendan! *sadface*)

| | happy | ] | Bad things today (Okay, it was yesterday. I'm slow to post)
- I had a midterm. I wasn't too happy with it
- Email from the ECE mom:
- "I totally neglected to check the grades you received on the two courses you wanted to transfer to your MS. Unfortunately, they can not be transferred because they were both below a B. You need to find two other courses to add to your POS so we can get it submitted. Stop by when you can. I'm here until 2:45 today. I will be out from 12 - 1."
This basically means... My grades from last year weren't good enough, so I'll have seven credits left to fulfill at the end of the year and I have to be here fall semester in 2009. That kinda sucks. A lot. Then again....
Good things today yesterday:
- The midterm wasn't only bad for me. I think other people had issues with it too.
- The midterm is over! In fact, ALL my midterms are over!
- I finally sent in my absentee ballot.
- The Phillies won the World Series! And to think, I was asked if I believed in The Curse of Billy Penn!
- OBOC Small Group auditions were yesterday. I auditioned a song for the first time (Pretty Sweet Day from Edges) and it got into the show! Not only that, but the show has been renamed "Pretty Sweet Decade" and we're the penultimate number in the show order! Hot damn!
- When I got home after OBOC, I played Turtles in Time with Jay before going to bed. It's been a while since we played it, and we decided to go for hard mode (haven't done that yet this year) and we finished in 30:02.
...Slash can suck it.

| From bad news to good news |
[Sep. 26th, 2008|05:19 pm] |
When you consider that I fell off my bike while going a bit too fast last night, shortly after I left a bar and had admitted I was already having balance issues... today was a good day.
I had to stay up late last night to let the bleeding go down. I will now have 2 scars on my chin that are related to hanging out with Diane, even if this time wasn't her knee. I ended up putting a knuckle bandage on it, because it was all I really had, and it didn't hold it closed all that well... I had to sleep on my back and I woke up with little drops of dried blood on my neck. Yeah, icky, I know.
This morning, I pretty promptly made an appointment with UHS, which took a half hour off my 6-hour ResNet shift. The nurse just cleaned it up (because I was scared to take a shower this morning) and gave me a handful of bandages. Last night I was worried that I might need stitches. This makes for a very happy contrast.
The thing that makes today even better: three days ago, I lost my flash drive Hermes and let myself get all emo about it. I gave up searching, James let me borrow one of his. Then, earlier today, I was standing next to the part of the desk with the phone that goes directly to security. I glanced down and saw Hermes sitting between the phone and the edge of the desk. It was probably there the whole time. I'm baffled that James and I didn't see it in our hours of searching.
Now I just need to get a new hard drive. Between my external and my two computers (560GB capacity there), I have a total of 35GB free space. |

| | aggravated | ] | So I was working at the IT center today, and I was working with my boss to fix a computer that someone on our staff had screwed up (big time). Part of the process involved bringing up a command prompt during a Windows XP install, which can basically only be accomplished by hitting Shift+F10. I tried to communicate this to my boss, and I'm pretty sure I said "shit+F10." I got it right on the third try.
Here's to cursing when speaking to your supervisors! *clink*
Of course, then I cursed a lot tonight..... I finished up a homework that's due tomorrow at work this afternoon and saved it to my flash drive (Because I think typing up homework is better both for my records and my professors' eyes). Later on, I handed off my computer and flash drive to another guy on staff so he could copy a file I was downloading over to the desk computer. Somehow, when I got my computer back, the flash drive was nowhere to be seen.
I'm stressed.
